MPP Gélinas advocates for universal contraception at Queen’s Park

QUEEN’S PARK – MPP France Gélinas (Nickel Belt), Official Opposition critic for Health, will be debating the Ontario NDP motion for universal, publicly available contraception today.

“Health care is a human right, and equitable access to contraception is a vital component of that for so many,” said Gélinas. “With this motion, we’ll help lower cost barriers to care, and help people make choices about their bodies and their lives.”

MPP Jennie Stevens (St. Catharines) tabled this motion for International Women’s Day in 2023. Today at Queen’s Park, she will be reading the testimony of hundreds of people who wrote to the Ontario NDP in support of this motion.

“We had people writing to us who are being forced to choose between rent and contraception because the cost of living is so unaffordable right now,” said Gélinas. “This motion is a common sense way that we can immediately make an impact, and I urge the Minister of Health to support the Ontario NDP in passing this motion.”

The first six months of British Columbia’s universal contraception program has led to thousands of people, mostly between the ages of 20-29, receiving universal birth control through their health care plan.
